Shear

The fourth type of transformation is shear. For example, a transformation corresponding to a shear along the x-axis moves each point parallel to the x-axis by an amount that is proportional to its distance from the x-axis. This is given by the assignment

shear transformation

where k defines how much shear. So, if k = 2 then the top right corner of the diver moves from 3 1 to 7 1.

Shear

Try this and other choices of k on the plot.

Your browser is not Java capable.

This window shows the side view of a diver. The diver can be sheared by entering the value of k in the appropriate textfield and then by pressing "Transform". To return diver to its initial shape press "Reset". The coordinates of a point on the graph can be obtained by clicking anywhere on the graph. The x and y coordinates will be displayed in the lower left hand side of the applet. To zoom in or zoom out, click the appropriate button.
