Item | Percentage of the Grade |
---|---|

Problem Sets | 40% |

Class Participation | 10% |

Midterm Paper | 25% |

Final Paper | 25% |

**Important:**

- In order to obtain a passing grade, you MUST have obtained
at
least half of the points on EACH component.

- In general, Problem Sets will be due one week after the material was covered in
class. See the syllabus
for the exact dates. Problem Sets should be turned in
**at the beginning of class**on the day they are due.

- Late homework will
**NOT**be accepted except by prior arrangement with the instructor.

- Of the 12 problem sets to be turned in, only the highest 11 will be used to compute the grade. That is to say, the lowest problem set grade will be dropped.

**Challenge questions:**

At the end of each problem set, there will be
challenge questions. These are optional: they will not count towards
(or
subtract from) the grade you get on that problem set. Full and correct
solutions for a problem set's challenge questions does count, however,
as a full class participation for the week in which the corresponding
material was covered, even if you were not in class. (But only a full
and correct solution set will count this way. If you try the challenge
questions on a regular basis and you get partial success, then we will
still count that in, somehow, in your final grade - but it will NOT
make
up for lack of class participation.)
