Title: Multiple antenna differential modulation.

Abstract:

Recently it was shown that the use of multiple antenna can tremendously boost the data capacity of wireless transmission. However, this assumes that the receiver knows the characteristics of the fading channel. In a mobile application this is not realistic. We present a differential modulation framework for multiple antenna where neither the transmitter nor the receiver knows the fading coefficients. Our framework can be seen as a natural extension of standard differential phase shift keying (DPSK) commonly used in single-antenna unknown-channel systems. In particular we introduce a class of diagonal signals where only one antenna is active at any time, and show how these signals may be used to achieve full transmitter diversity and low probability of error.
