Title: Period equals index in the Brauer group of a surface

Abstract: This is a report on joint work with Jason Starr. We will explain
a second proof of the period equals index theorem using methods from the
theory of moduli of rational curves. The methods come from studying the
general problem as to when a family of varieties over a surface has a
rational section.
